Standardbearer -preview by DavidSondered Standardbearer -preview by DavidSondered
Angels Cruentis Standard Bearer.

This is not by far completed, and the entire image is a bit larger...showing the standard he is holding. And some more... stuff.
Things not completed (though sketched out and/or partly done) are- standard, Chainsword, Tabard, Backpack, Pauldron with mosaic pattern (shown in the preview above) SpaceHulk interior background with marines fighting genestealers... (so there's sort of no point in showing those parts just yet)

Thought I'd pop in something on Deviantart before posting it on the blog.
This will go up with some other things on the blog on Monday.

Tell you what.
If you link to www.studiocolrouphobia.net you can use this image.
If you want to use the final illustration or anything else from me, I'd like to get paid (because I do work as an illustrator), but since you asked and because this is only a work in progress, why not.

Site looks nice, I'd ask Adrian Smith/GW if you can use that background though, but that's just me.

I love the way you've done his eyes. Almost every other depiction of a Space Marine helmet has lenses over the eyes, but you've got a much more sunken, skull-like thing going on and I'm crazy about it!

Cheers, it's glowing "camera" behind a shaded lens though, but it makes it look like sunken in eyes indeed.

Glad you like :)

nah maybe you are not first one who used that idea...but you are first who did it soo good that its look like a way witch is good to folow:) As long time fan of wh40k i saw LOTS of marines helmets...and till now i belived in filled eye holes helmets superiority-eh dont know how say it exactly, hope you can understand...but this realy changed my opinion- this "terminator eyes under helm witp empty yeye holes" scary and impresive...bit jump on me remebers on killzone^^; also that small skull noise "V" reference is great idea:) Perfect helmet pattern...I hope will see it on more of your marines:))) great work *1)

Cheers, yeah it happends on some more marines, mist of the marines have 'Maximus' armour though, with modifications to the helmets to help against 'warp-contagions'.

For me, the eyes of a marine is a place where there are cameras.
In multiple BL novels, we hear/read that the marines get even more superior vision through the lens of their helmet (though most of them prefer to be helmetless because they trust their actual eyes more).
So For me that mean that in the "eyes" of the helmet, there are cameras that sit behind a cover-lens. On my marines, the camera has a red glow to it, hence it shows through the dimmed lens.

If that makes sense :)

yes ist make sence absolutly... on my point of view from several novels and also games is marine vision maked as seriously complicated device consisting of HUD display , couple of sensors-heat,IR,telescope camra witch make a green/red light(green probably considered as night visor reference, red for IR) and all that behind very durable "glass" ...so your/this pattern is exelently made how helmed with this all stuff will loke like without that "cover glass" or with transparent cover glass witch make bit more sence i think:)) Its make them way more real and belivable witch is probably source of mine big interest in this one :))

Thank you.
My goal is that all my illustrations should be believable and in that sense, "real" (not realistic. I want people to look at my illustrations and get an instant feeling of looking at something they believe exist).

I apologize for my stupidity and for taking your time, but how is difference betwen "real" and "realistic?...I thought those are same eng words? Its something above dictionary:)

You are right, but it depends a bit on the context (situation) it is used in/

Here is to make it a bit more confusing:

Thesaurus(wordbook) explanation:

REALISTIC

Definition
• accepting things as they are in fact and not making decisions based on unlikely hopes for the future
"Let's be realistic (about this) - I just can't afford to pay that much money.
It isn't realistic to expect people to work for so little money."
or
• seeming to exist or be happening in fact
"The special effects were so realistic."

REAL

Definition
• existing in fact; not imaginary
Assuring the patient that she has a real and not imaginary problem is the first step.
"There is a very real threat that he will lose his job."

• real earnings/income, etc.
the value of earnings, etc. after the effect of rising prices is considered
"Wages rose by 2.9% last year, but real earnings still fell by 1.3%."

• in real terms
existing in fact, despite what appears to be the situation
"A family man's earnings rose 5% in real terms after deducting income tax, etc."

Those are definitions as per Cambridge online dictionary of English ( [link] )

Now here is how I have seen it used within the artworld (where things can get weird):

REALISTIC

Definition

• A definition of the art along with a certain style. For instance, Realism, Hyper-realism or similar.
"It looks real, like someone took a photograph of the scene"

REAL

Definition

• A Definition of art along with the feeling the viewer get whilst looking at the artwork.
"It looks like it could work/be real."
"I believe this could happen."
"I believe this could actually work without it being some Hollywood special effect or set-up digital alteration"

I am trying to paint things that, when you look at them, instinctively gives you the feel that they could/are real - without you thinking "oh it's a photo/special-effect/hyperrealistic painting".
I want to inspire and make your mind not look at the image and start wondering how I did it, but rather make your mind go "wow, that's so cool, that means that my idea could look like this..." and then have your mind wander on other ideas.

I hope that cleared up what I meant.

And it's not stupidity, don't worry about that. It comes down to language and what circumstances you have used words in. Realism for Artists mean different things (within different art-movements), but it also mean different things from Cinematographers, writers, teachers, photographers, philosophers, sociologists, police officers and just about every other group of people there are that deal with what's "real" and so on...

Not really, beyond being personal iconography.
It's based upon Muslim mosaics. The theme of the chapter is Angelic/Christian/Monastic, with muslim mosaics for company markings and personal markings and Bells as a general iconography.
Chapter Icon is a fire surrounded by wings.

I am describing how I create this chapter here:
